Hammer Down

Overwatch 2, a new game or a sequel? This is a question that no longer lingers in the minds of the gaming community. Well, now it’s finally in our hands. We can say that while it’s less of a reinvention and more of an evolution of its predecessor, Overwatch 1, the intense, brilliantly colorful FPS that once stole our hearts. Overwatch 2 brings enough new aspects to the table to feel like its own distinct game.

Now, The good news is, if you happen to play one of those heroes sitting nicely tiers above the rest, you’re in good shape to climb in ranked mode. The bad news is that team balancing is an issue. Certain heroes are so obviously overpowered, making them a must-pick every game, and If they aren’t picked, your chances of victory significantly decrease.

We do have high hopes for a bright future in the competitive scene of Overwatch 2, but only if Blizzard can get a hold on how to make their ranking system work properly. A large portion of the OW2 community, including Twitch streamers and pros, are extremely upset with how low in the ranks they would place after winning their mandatory seven games.

On November 17th, 2022, patch notes were released, guaranteeing that competitive matchmaking will be adjusted/fixed. Overwatch 2 received a new update that addresses a couple of heroes and provides a handful of bug fixes that should bring peace to players on all platforms. As for the hero balance, it’s good to see some recovering in terms of power while others will have to deal with slight nerfs. As always, Blizzard wants to find the middle ground and see the players shuffling through all of the characters rather than sticking with a “broken meta.”

Blizzard may have set an incredibly high bar for itself here because it’s not a radical reinvention. Luckily for us, Overwatch 2 still revolves around the most exciting, team-based shooters, including a variety of characters with great design across all its 35 heroes. Each hero is unique to control, everybody’s weapons still feel fantastic to wield, and the satisfying sounds they produce are a plus. So, if the pertinent question to ask about Overwatch 2 is if it’s a fun game? Our answer is yes, but it is also not currently at its full potential. Perhaps that greatness will be recaptured over time as the community provides feedback through many victories and defeats to come.

The fundamentals are all set for Overwatch to shine as it once did in the multiplayer shooter scene, and the future definitely looks bright with what is set to come over the following months. I can only judge what’s in front of me, and that is a very fun, competitive, team-based FPS packed full of charm and one that many will spend hundreds of hours playing.

After six years and millions of dedicated players later, Overwatch 2 was released, and what a ride it’s been.
